Jaguar rear view problem in Germany

From Autocar Magazine, w/e 28 February 1976

Jaguar rear view problem in Germany

Federal officials have refused to give approval in Germany to the Jaguar XJ-S because the large rear pillars do not meet German safety laws. The Federal Motor Vehicle Authority have also taken exception to the rear pillars of the Lancia Monte Carlo and have refused to grant this car general certification.

According to our contemporary in Germany, Autozeitung, the ruling means that each individual XJ-S brought into the country will have to be taken to the authorities for individual registration and approval until the position is made clear. However the Jaguar is not banned from Germany at this stage, and sales are continuing. The German regulations lay down specific angles of vision which must be obtained from the driver's seat, and it is these requirements which have been invoked over the XJ-S.

Colt try the police market

From Autocar Magazine, w/e 28 February 1976

The Colt Car Company have recently been putting a police demonstrator version of their Galant 1600 estate car round various police forces in Great Britain for evaluation. The car is fitted out by Bosch to latest radio specifications, and has attracted a great deal of comment from the forces who have tried it. The car is claimed to be the only Japanese police car in Europe, but so far no police force have braved the wrath of rate-payers to order one. However Colt say that some forces have been most enthusiastic in their praise of performance, comfort, handling and economy.

The Alfa 33 : Rediscover the magic of motoring

Alfa Romeo 33 Advert

There are a lot of very practical cars around today. But none with the magic of an Alfa Romeo.

Driving an Alfa 33 is all motoring should be. Practical, but with that dash of magic.

And now Alfa Romeo have gone even further. With the Alfa 33 Estate which has an uprated 95bhp engine and four wheel drive.

So you can go practically anywhere, in any weather.

The already elegant lines of the Alfa 33 have been skilfully blended by Pininfarina into what must be one of the most stylish estates on - or off - the road.

Of course, should a spacious four wheel drive estate be a little too practical for you, there's always the rest of the stylish Alfa 33 range to choose from.

There's the Green Cloverleaf for example. With a 105bhp Alfa boxer engine driving through a slick five speed gearbox.

The performance is all you'd expect from a technically advanced car with Alfa's sporting pedigree.

Like reaching 60mph from rest in 9.7 seconds and being capable of 116 miles per hour.

And naturally the Alfa 33 range has handling that makes driving an Alfa Romeo what it always has been.

Pure magic.

The Ford Taunus TC

Up until the late 1960s the American Ford company had two quite separate European divisions - Ford of Germany and Ford of Britain. In much the same way as General Motors had with Vauxhall and Opel, they both had different, competing ranges of models with no shared parts.

In 1967 Ford USA merged the two to create Ford of Europe. The first product of co-operation was actually launched two years earlier in the shape of the Transit - replacing the UK Ford Thames and the European Taunus Transit. The Mk1 Escort followed, and then the Capri.

The next co-developed product saw a differentiation between the UK and European variants, with the Ford Cortina Mk3 and the Taunus TC ("Taunus/Cortina"). Both had the same underpinnings and basic body structures but whereas the UK Cortina had very American "coke bottle" curves to the body lines the European Taunus TC was much more square-edged and restrained. Despite looking quite similar at a quick glance they are very different when studied in detail.

Ford Taunus Ford Taunus XL Ford Taunus XL Ford Cortina Mk3 RTJ338L Blue Ford Cortina Mk3 2-Door MLR538L Ford Cortina Mk3 L

The Europeans got a lovely Coupe variant which was never translated into a Cortina, a great shame in my opinion.

Ford Taunus Coupe

The styling differences didn't make it through to the facelifted replacements as the Taunus TC2 / Cortina Mk4 looked identical.

Road Rallying - how things have changed!

Back when I was heavily in to Road Rallying, 20 years ago (blimey, where does the time go?!), the entry list was usually full of rear wheel drive Fords and Opels - Mk2 Escorts, Mantas, Asconas, that sort of thing - but as their increasing age and competition desirability has taken toll on the number of cheaply available ones around it's not surprising that budget entry-level rallying is filled nowadays with FWD hatches like the Peugeot 306 and Ford Puma.

I went along to a novice Road Rally in North Wales last weekend and it was quite an eye-opener, just one solitary Mk2 Escort (a four door, too), and an almost-too-clean Mk1. How times have changed!

Car 20 - Craig Galeandro, Neil Galeandro - White Ford Escort Mk2

Car 38 - Martin Williams, William Atkins - Green Ford Escort Mk1

I bet the more modern machinery is just as competitive though, if not as sideways. Pretty much the only cheap RWD car that's new enough to be around in significant numbers is the BMW Compact, which had strong representation, not least from my Brother competing in his.

My gallery of pictures from the start of the event is here.

1955 Triumph TR2

1955 Triumph TR2

The TR2 was manufactured between August 1953 and October 1955. 8628 were made and of those 5805 were exported abroad.

The TR2 was originally sold for £864 16s 6d and a good car will now fetch in the region of £12,000.

The factory records show that this particular car was manufactured on Thursday 9th June 1955 between 4-4:30pm. There have been 4 recorded owners. The last registered owner started restoration of the car and the current owner, who bought the car on 17th April 2003, got it roadworthy on 15th August 2003. Since then it has been displayed at a number of shows and been used on a large number of runs in the UK and France.

If you're a Triumph fan, or know someone who is a Triumph enthusiast, then why not check out my Triumph gift and present ideas in my shop. If you're interested in something for the TR3, TR4, TR5, TR6, TR7, Dolomite, Toledo, Spitfire, 1300, GT6 , Herald, Vitesse, 2000 or any of the other models then have a look!

The Peugeot 505 GTI and GTI Family

Peugeot 505 GTI Family

Imagine a superlatively luxurious 5-seat car capable of 0-62 mph in around 12 seconds and up to 108 mph. Visualise GTI-style suspension, response and roadholding. Then add a tailgate and the ability to swallow up to 79 cu. ft. of luggage with the rear seat folded. That’s the new 505 GTI Estate for 1985.

Now think of a 7-seater limousine with very similar attributes but even greater space flexibility — and that’s the GTI Family.

These two breathtaking models share the same power train: 130 BHP (PS-DIN) at 5,750 rpm from the fuel-injected engine, a 5-speed manual gearbox, and a limited-slip differential. Trickle through the down-town traffic, or leap across continents, these dynamic spacecrafts are designed to cope with any demand in any weather.

For the driver there’s the ‘custom-build’ seat: sliding, reclining, with lumbar support and height adjustment — and a heater. An instrument panel as good looking as it is informative in the new fascia, and an overhead lamp console.

For all the occupants there’s sumptuous velour upholstery on the deep padded seats, plus an advanced heating/ventilation system. As a combined extra-cost option it is possible to specify automatic temperature control with full air conditioning, for the ultimate in environmental comfort.

To complete the new 1986 GTI we’ve built in a radio/cassette installation that will make every journey an experience to rhapsodise about with a speaker system producing concert hall sound.

The Peugeot 505 GTI Estate and GTI Family — models of sheer delight.

The Vanden Plas 1500 - the luxury Allegro

A natural choice for the man of taste

Vanden Plas 1500

For the motorist who values quality above all else, finding a suitable car is not an easy matter. Usually there are only two broad alternatives available. Either to buy a massive limousine - all very nice at times but less than delightful in a narrow country lane or squeezing into a parking space. Or to buy a grand semi-sports car - fully fitted with luxury right enough, but very thirsty for petrol, and consequently over-powered for everyday motoring.

Well now there’s a third option - the Vanden Plas 1500. Almost alone amongst specialist car-makers, Vanden Plas exemplifies the maxim that good things can come in smaller packages.

We’re not saying that there’s no place for the luxury limousine or sports car - far from it. Indeed, we’ve created some very exclusive large cars ourselves. Our point is that you shouldn’t be forced into buying a car that doesn’t really suit you, simply in order to enjoy the luxury which you so rightly demand.

Hence the Vanden Plas 1500. Built in the great tradition of Vanden Plas coachwork, its basic design is one of the most advanced on the roads today. It is compact to the point of genius - easily handled in town traffic yet spacious enough inside to make touring a really grand affair. Powerful and economical too, it embodies so many things that most people want from a car, together with an extra standard of luxury that the discerning will truly appreciate.

For people with style and leisure in mind

How does one describe the Vanden Plas 1500’s good looks? Point out the restrained yet very effective coachline? Mention that distinctive radiator grille—recognized and respected throughout the world? Show you the unique hub caps with their special trim rings and Vanden Plas motifs? Or single out the wrap-around bumpers which are not only very smart but also extra safe?

One could do all these things—but ultimately it would count for nothing. The Vanden Plas 1500 isn’t a collection of features. It’s a thoughtful total design which invites immediate response. It’s as simple as that.

Indeed, the Vanden Plas 1500 is a car that you can take anywhere—to a point-to-point or to the Hilton. Its simple elegance puts cars twice its size to shame and its delightful practicality means it can happily go where the monsters fear to tread.

Like all the world’s great cars, of course, the Vanden Plas 1500 combines its style with an unswerving devotion to safety. That’s why there are servo-assisted brakes, with discs at the front, two sealed-beam rectangular headlamps supplemented by twin foglamps, reversing lamps, hazard warning flashers, a walnut-veneered fascia surrounded by non-reflective surfaces, recessed door handles, anti-burst locks with childproof catches on the rear doors, and an exterior mirror mounted on each front door.

For your suitcases, hamper, golf clubs, shopping and the like, there’s over 9 cubic feet of boot. Ample luggage room for four people — but carpeted and fitted with a courtesy light to meet Vanden Plas standards.

Vanden Plas 1500

Considered for your comfort

The interior of the Vanden Plas 1500 is dedicated to one single-minded aim — making motoring a true pleasure. The broad seats are upholstered in knit-backed expanded vinyl and hide. You’l1 find the through-flow ventilation units sensibly mounted in the centre of the fascia. There are dual arm-rests for everyone.

And, of course, touches of pure indulgence — stitched gaiters over the gear lever and hand brake, unique Vanden Plas door trim, with companion compartments on the front doors, and lush felt-backed carpeting.

The power to charm

With a world-proven 1485 c.c. British Leyland o.h.c. engine at the heart of the new Vanden Plas, you can sprint from 0 to 50 m.p.h. in approximately ten seconds—or cruise economically for hours. Using the special fifth gear, it can return nearly *39 m.p.g. at a steady 50 m.p.h.

For all its power though, the Vanden Plas 1500 never loses its elegant serenity. Its front—wheel drive, revolutionary Hydragas suspension system and quite remarkable soundproofing keep things calm, comfortable and quiet for mile after glorious mile.

Naturally enough, the Vanden Plas 1500 is also available with automatic transmission as an extra cost option. With this transmission you can choose the way you drive. In town trafiic it will do all the work for you, selecting the right gear for every situation - which leaves you free to concentrate on higher things. But if your mood decides otherwise, you can use it as a silky-smooth manual box to make your own clutchless gear-changes — as only you know when.

Love me, love my Mini

From "Small Car" magazine, November 1964

Paula Noble and her pink Mini

Paula Noble, well known 24 year old London model, spends 21 guineas every few months having her Mini resprayed to match her clothes. "It's really cheaper than having a new hat, and so much more fun" she told us. "First it was red, then that heavenly Rolls Royce silver grey, then that Jaguar silver blue and now it's shocking pink. Since I started to think pink it's marvellous. I always get let out of the sideroads first. People are so understanding when they see me coming..." We can imagine.

Paula's next yen is for a series of blues... so flattering. Her other gimmick is what she describes as "a perfectly darling little fire extinguisher in silver". She thought she'd have it because she once wrote a car off and had to be pulled through the window, something she didn't enjoy.

Spotted: Alpina B9 3.5

There we were, earlier in the year, stuck in traffic on the Autobahn. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a distinctive shark-nose appear in view, it could only be a BMW E28 5-Series.

Henna Red BMW Alpina B9 3.5

Or could it?

Technically this isn't a BMW, it's an Alpina. But it looks like a BMW - so how does that work then? Well Alpina are registered as a manufacturer in their own right rather than existing as an aftermarket tuning company, such is the amount of work undertaken on each of their cars and their relationship with BMW themselves.

This B9 3.5 started out as a BMW 528i (when Alpina launched the B9 in 1981 that was the top of the 5-series tree, the 535i and M5 didn't come until later). Alpina binned the 2.8 six in favour of the 3.5 from higher up in the BMW range and treated it to heavy modifications to further increase power by 27 horses to 245bhp.

Of course, such an increase in power requires upgrades to suspension and braking and Alpina duly obliged. The distinctive Alpina wheels immediately set the B9 apart from a regular 5er along with the striking front and rear bodywork addenda and reworked interior.

All this amounted to quite an increase in performance, 0-60 in under 6.5 seconds and over 150mph at the top end.

The B9 was the first Alpina to be based on the E28 5-series but they followed it up with the quicker still B10 four years later.

I adore the E28 5er, and I adore Alpina cars in general, Burkard Bovensiepen is a man who is responsible for some legendary BMW-derived cars over the years. I have to say though that the ultimate E28 for me is, and always will be, the M5.

BMW E28 M5

This was one of the greatest Q-Cars of all time. A virtually standard-looking 5 (unlike the bespoilered Alpinas) packing an almighty 286bhp BMW Motorsport 3.5 six. The BMW M-Division hand-built nearly 2,200 of them.

The factory may have done it better, but the Alpina (as is usually the case) was there first. Both are a rare treat to see today.

At 115mph you deserve to be behind bars.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta Advert

When Alfa Romeo design a high performance car for family drivers there are a number of factors they take into consideration.

And these add up to safety.

Because as roads become busier the need for your family's security becomes vital.

The 2.0 litre Giulietta was created to give this security without reducing the excitement of driving an Alfa Romeo.

The twin overhead camshafts, twin choke carburettors and electronic ignition deliver scorching acceleration and reserves of power that no other car in its class can offer.

And the distinctive wedge shape creates a wind cheating aerodynamic profile that is stylishly Alfa Romeo.

The cut-off tail with integral spoiler ensures that the air glides off with minimum turbulence to enhance roadholding and convert maximum engine power to wheel traction.

But Giulietta's unique air-slicing shape offers more than superlative performance.

It has been designed around rigid steel bars that form a safety cage for you and your family.

A protective cell that has crumple zones front and rear and anti-burst door locks all-round.

Central locking and child proof locks protect inquisitive children, whilst servo assisted discs (with an automatic pressure regulator that brakes from 60mph to standstill in 3.54 seconds) protect everyone.

Add to this the roadholding and handling that Alfa Romeo is renowned for and the Giulietta is more than a prestige, top performance-car.

It's top security too.
